The Opening of Japan

Back to Edo Period, Japan was ruled by Tokugawa shogunate. The country was closed and traded only with Dutch and Chinese through Daimyo for 250 years. Even though Japan isolated form other country, it still get some knowledge and news about medication and science through Chinese and Dutch. Japan in this period is peaceful and people create a lot of unique cultures for instances Ukiyo-e painting, Shu-Shi, Tempura, etc. Japan follow Sakoku policy strictly until Matthew C. Perry who was an United State Nava forced Japan to open ports (1853) because the U.S. want to trade with Japan. He force Japan to open by bringing four warships to Edo-wan and intimidates to start the war if Japan don’t open the country for trading. Japan government and Japanese shock with these big blackships and worry about this situation. Finally, Japan government decided to open country because don’t want to have war.

Meiji period (1868–1912) is the time that Japan start to open the country and shifting to modern industry country. Japan interested in western culture and bring them to develop the country until become developed country within 20 years and have power and military to fight with other country until defeated China and Russia in the war.
